Washington, D.C. – Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) today congratulated thirteen Virginia schools on receiving designation as “2009 Blue Ribbon Schools” for outstanding academics and student achievement. The announcement was made Tuesday by Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan.
The schools will be honored at a November ceremony in Washington, DC, where each school will receive a plaque and flag signifying their accomplishment.
“Virginia is home to a number of the nation’s top performing schools, and I applaud each of the thirteen that received the exemplary ‘Blue Ribbon School’ designation, said Senator Webb. “A quality education is a prerequisite for economic opportunity and success not only for students, but for the Commonwealth as well.”
The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools that have shown academic excellence or that demonstrate impressive gains in student achievement to above-average levels. The schools serve as models for other schools throughout the nation and details of their achievements are shared on the U.S. Department of Education’s website.
