Florida Today: Our views: New GI Bill

August 7, 2009

Many Americans remain polarized in their view about government programs, but none should disagree about the worthiness of this one:

The new GI Bill that began allocating its maximum education benefits this week as part of a law that’s expected to offer veterans $78 billion in aid during the coming decade.

It’s the most comprehensive such benefit since the original GI Bill went into effect in 1944, educating the Greatest Generation that fought World War II and playing a major role in the nation’s post-war prosperity.

The new measure offers the same prospect for returning Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans and all members of the armed services who have worn the uniform since 9/11.

Under the new law, active-duty troops who agree to serve another four years can transfer their tuition benefits to their spouse or children. That’s appropriate considering the enormous sacrifices that military families have made, and continue to make, while loved ones fight overseas.

Congress passed the bill last year, thanks to the dogged work of Sen. James Webb, D-Va., a Vietnam combat veteran whose son has fought in Iraq. Hesponsored the measure and fought for its passage.

The result could be a half-million veterans or family members participating the first year, including local veterans who could attend Brevard Community College, Florida Tech, the University of Central Florida or other schools.

The veterans have served with courage, dedication and honor.
We’re happy to see the bill — which we strongly supported — going into full effect.
