Keeping Internet Access Free from Federal Taxes

In an effort to make telecom and Internet services more affordable and attainable for all Virginians, I have supported legislation such as the Internet Access Tax Moratorium, the MOBILE Cell Phone Act, the Mobile Wireless Tax Fairness Act, and the Cell Phone Early Termination Fee, Transparency, and Fairness Act.

Consistent and reliable telecommunications services provide an open and free marketplace of ideas and speech. Telecom is also increasingly indispensable to educational and career advancement in today’s society, subsequently the federal government should not take any action to unreasonably deter consumers from signing up for broadband Internet services.

Following our efforts, Congress decided in 2007 to extend the Internet access tax moratorium for a full seven years, far longer than any time previously authorized by Congress. As we continue to expand broadband from Southwest Virginia to the Eastern Shore, we need to ensure that Internet communication is available and accessible to all.
