Protecting Social Security
Before the institution of Social Security, nearly half of America’s seniors lived in poverty.  For decades now, hard-working Americans have counted on Social Security to safeguard their basic needs.  I am committed to maintaining the integrity and sustainability of this critical program.

With projections that the trust fund will be exhausted by 2041, the Social Security program faces long-term fiscal challenges. While not in the near future, the consequences of waiting to act are serious.  The cost to achieve long-range solvency is projected to be about twice as large in 2041 than if Congress acts today.

In order to ensure that Social Security remains fiscally sustainable for future generations, I support the establishment of a neutral commission to review Social Security, as well as Medicare and Medicaid, and make comprehensive recommendations to Congress for sustaining the solvency and stability of these programs.

I have also supported legislation that increases funding for the Social Security Administration (SSA) to address its case backlog, which was included in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008.  These funds will help the SSA begin to address the more than 750,000 cases awaiting a hearing.  This is a matter of fundamental fairness for many Virginians.
